Muslim women‑led nonprofits are engaging in advocacy despite facing a surge in Islamophobia

Nonprofits led by Muslim women remain extensively engaged in a wide range of civic activities, even though 72% say they have experienced Islamophobia in their work.

That’s one of the main findings of the study that we conducted together. It is the basis of the applied research project – a type of dissertation – that one of us (Hussain) completed for her professional doctorate in philanthropic leadership. It will be posted online in mid-2026 to Indiana University’s scholarship repository.

The phrase “concentration camp” is freighted with dark historical meaning. Most people hear it and instinctively think of concentration camps used by the Nazis to exterminate Jews and other minority populations during the Holocaust.

But the use and name of concentration camps originated far earlier. In the late 1800s, Spanish military officials used concentration camps – reconcentrados – during their 1896–97 Cuban campaign to isolate civilians from rebels, resulting in widespread death and disease.

The UK has raised its terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe”, meaning an attack within the next six months is considered highly likely. Loin d’être une camisole, les règles budgétaires, si elles sont bien pensées, peuvent être d’autant plus efficaces qu’elles renforcent la coordination.
